Ryan Reynolds launches diversity initiative

When Ryan Reynolds is not busy saving the world by helping in the search of a missing teddy bear, he is busy supporting creatives in the film industry in every way possible.

The actor took to Twitter to announce his new initiative that will lend support to aspiring filmmakers from un-represented communities. Accompanying his tweet with a two-minute video, the actor shed light on how the world of movies is still lacking the powerful voices of many important people.

“Making a movie, well it’s a group effort,” he said. “But for entirely too long, that group has systematically excluded Black, Indigenous, people of color and a whole host of other marginalized communities,” he said.

“So here’s what we’re gonna do. COVID willing, which is a weird thing to say, I’m going to be starting a movie this fall,” he said. “And I’m committed to bringing between 10 and 20 trainees from the BIPOC community and all other marginalized communities of all ages.,” he added.

How exactly will this work? All those that will become part of his Group Effort initiative will receive a salary, paid accommodation and travelled out from Reynolds’ salary. These chosen candidates will get to spend time learning real-time on movie sets, acquiring knowledge from some of the best in the business.

Further details about the application process are meant to be announced this week but it is confirmed: the world needs more people like Ryan Reynolds.
