There’s very few trailers that pierce through your heart, move you to the core and leave you speechless. For Sama is one of them.
Here is an intimate journey of a woman falling in love, getting married and giving birth to a girl, Sama, all while she is living through the Syrian conflict day in, day out. The war in Aleppo becomes the backdrop for the most integral, special years of her adult life.
For Sama is the first documentary by Emmy-award winning filmmakers, Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts.
This touching tale of al-Khateab’s was immensely praised and applauded by critics and audiences at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, where it won the prestigious ‘Prix L’Œil d’Or’ honor for Best Documentary.
This means that the documentary automatically becomes eligible for the ‘Best Documentary’ category for the Oscars.
This is not the first international film festival where For Sama has been screened; previously the documentary was also showcased at the SXSW Film Festival, RiverRun International Film Festival and the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

“There simply hasn’t been a film like it before… There is such love here. Even the most respected Syrian war documentaries (City of Ghosts, or Under the Wire), haven’t come close to this.”https://t.co/a2ymnjJgKu— For Sama (@forsamafilm) May 18, 2019
“The film, which has already won awards, was met with three standing ovations last week at Cannes, where it will be up for several further awards in the coming days, including the Caméra d’Or.”@victoriajyan reviews #ForSama at #Cannes2019https://t.co/56dQAz9GHo
